John Ellis 1834-09
Mr John Ellis one of the oldest residents and the descendant of a familly whose name goes back generations in whitwell history, died on Friday at the age of 77.He was landlord of the Dale inn and afterwards the tennant of Highwood farm.For some years he has lived in retirement in Whitwell and was one of the villages most respected inhabitants,being of a most genial nature and full of wit and humour. In his younger days he was an enthusiastic cricketer and the Church field has often been the scene of his prowess with the bat,for being a man of fine physique he was a mighty hitter.His death removes another of the few Whitwell old standards who are able to recount with such inteest the doings of Whitwell in its earlier days.The funeral was on Monday and attended by his numerous relatives and friends.Deceased leaves two sons and four daughters.
